‪Note: the IRS DOES NOT contact taxpayers by email or phone to request personal or financial information or collection of debt. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels.
IRS will NEVER:

• NEVER: Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. The IRS will first mail you a (letter) bill if you owe any taxes.
• NEVER:Threaten to immediately bring in police or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying.
• NEVER: Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
• NEVER: Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

DO NOT GIVE ANY PERSONAL OR FINANCIAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE 

The IRS contacts through regular mail delivered by the US Postal Service.
However, there are special circumstances in which the IRS will contact you to come to a home or business, such as when a taxpayer has an overdue tax bill, to secure a delinquent tax return or a delinquent employment tax payment, or to tour a business as part of an audit or during criminal investigations.
